PHR certification requirements, degree by years
The PHR has one entry requirement: professional-level HR experience, and the more education you have, the less of it you need. There is no course to complete and no exam to pass first.

Years of experience by degree
Professional-level HR experience, by education:
- Master’s degree or higher: 1 year.
- Bachelor’s degree: 2 years.
- No degree: 4 years.
The degree does not have to be in HR, and the experience need not be current or consecutive. A business or psychology degree shortens the path exactly as an HR degree does. For comparison, the SPHR asks for 4–7 years of HR work, and the aPHR asks for none.
What counts as professional-level HR work
The certification handbook (p. 8) describes it by what the job involves, not by title:
- using independent judgment and discretion;
- some authority to make decisions;
- in-depth work such as gathering, analyzing and interpreting data;
- dealing with people at several levels, decision-makers included;
- being personally accountable for results.
The same page suggests the aPHR instead for HR clerks and assistants, for managers whose main job is in another function, and for people moving into HR. Describe duties in the application in those terms: a coordinator who runs investigations or owns a benefits renewal is closer to the line than the title suggests.
How the application works
- Apply online and list each HR job with its dates and duties.
- Pay $495 with the application (cost).
- Wait for review: 1 business day in most cases. Some applications are picked for a random audit, and you then send job descriptions and a transcript; without them the application is declared ineligible.
- Schedule within the 180 days after approval; testing is year-round.
- Test at a Pearson VUE center, or online where OnVUE is offered.
A PHR is not a degree
Searches for a “PHR degree” mix two things up. It is a certification: no school awards it, you earn it by passing the exam and keep it with 60 credits every 3 years. A degree only shortens the experience you need first.
Not eligible yet
Without professional-level experience you have two routes: the aPHR, the entry exam of the same body, or the SHRM-CP (eligibility requirement: none). Which one fits depends on the job you want next: aPHR vs PHR · aPHR vs SHRM-CP · which certification first.

PHR requirements, quick answers
Do you need a degree for the PHR?
No. A degree only shortens the experience you need: 1–4 years of HR work, the most without one.
Can I take it with no HR experience?
Does my HR experience have to be recent?
No: it need not be current or consecutive. The handbook adds that your most recent experience may weigh most when eligibility is reviewed.
How long does it take to get PHR certified?
Once your experience qualifies, most of the time is your own study. HRCI processes an application in 1 business day (10 if it is audited), then you have 180 days to test.
