SHRM-CP certification, checked against the 2026 handbook
The SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) is the Society for Human Resource Management’s credential for people who do HR work at the operational level: carrying out policy, running day-to-day HR, acting as the HR contact for a team. It has no eligibility requirement, so someone new to HR can sit it. The exam has 134 questions, of which 110 are scored, split evenly by weight between behavior and HR knowledge, taken in person at a Prometric center. Every figure below comes from the 2026 handbook or SHRM’s exam pages.

Question 1 of 4 · People · 19%
An employee was placed on a performance improvement plan (PIP) with the goal to "be more proactive and show greater initiative." After 60 days, the manager claims the employee failed the PIP. Why would this PIP be hard to defend if the employee is later terminated?
Spelling out pay consequences would not fix the core flaw that the goal cannot be objectively assessed.
"Proactive" and "initiative" are traits, not measurable results; without specific behaviors and standards nobody can show the plan was failed.
PIPs do not require an appeal to a third-party mediator; an appeal would still have nothing concrete to review.
Bias training for the manager is not a PIP requirement and would not make vague goals measurable.
Sixty days is a common PIP length; the problem is not the time allowed but the fact that nothing measurable was set.
Question 2 of 4 · Interpersonal competencies · 13.5%
Two team leads reach a verbal truce after a prolonged resource dispute. They agree to "communicate better moving forward." Which action should HR take to ensure this mediation yields a sustainable outcome?
A vague promise to communicate better has nothing to check; written commitments with owners and follow-up dates make the agreement observable and keep it alive.
Separating the leads and splitting resources avoids the conflict instead of resolving it and might look like punishment for taking part in mediation.
A forced public apology tends to breed resentment and does not define what either lead will do differently.
Closing the file on a verbal truce, with nothing specific agreed, removes all follow-up and lets the old dispute return.
An automatic penalty for breaking the 'spirit' of a truce is punitive and unenforceable because nothing specific was agreed.
Question 3 of 4 · Leadership competencies · 19%
HR discovers confidential investigation notes stored in an unrestricted shared drive accessible to all employees. What should HR do first?
Waiting for the log review leaves the notes open in the meantime; logs can be reviewed after access is locked down.
An email asking everyone to delete files is unreliable and advertises the sensitive records to the whole workforce.
Exposure to every employee is already an internal breach of confidential records; leaving the files in place keeps it going.
Containment comes first: moving the notes to an access-controlled location stops further exposure while HR then reviews who opened them.
Announcing that no breach occurred is premature and might be false, since HR does not yet know who viewed the files.
Question 4 of 4 · Organization · 18%
An employee formally alleges severe harassment by a department supervisor. HR must ensure confidentiality to the extent possible and provide interim protective measures. Which action best secures the workplace without prematurely punishing the respondent?
A warning is discipline before findings, and leaving both in the same roles does nothing to protect the complainant.
Forcing the complainant to move puts the burden on the person who reported and can look like retaliation.
Moving the supervisor to equivalent work with the same pay and status separates the parties without treating the allegation as proven.
Firing on the allegation alone skips the impartial investigation the respondent is owed.
Unpaid suspension is a penalty imposed before any findings; if separation is needed, paid leave or reassignment avoids prejudging the case.

The content outline is the 2026 BASK. Three behavioral clusters carry half the weight and three HR knowledge domains carry the other half. Each row opens a page with its own questions; the BASK page explains how the competencies and functional areas sit inside them.
Knowledge items are the larger group, by count and by weight (the Question types row above). Most test the 14 functional areas of HR expertise, from talent acquisition to risk management; a smaller share test the foundational concepts behind the behavioral competencies.
Situational judgment items (SJIs) are the rest. Each describes a realistic work problem and lists several responses; more than one can work, but only the single best response earns credit, as judged by a panel of experienced HR professionals (exam options and fees page). Our study guide shows how to rank the options, and the practice test mixes both types.
Four claims prep sites still repeat
“Nine behavioral competencies.” The 2026 BASK has eight; Inclusion & Diversity and Global Mindset were merged into Inclusive Mindset.
“You can test from home.” As of Oct 2026 the only option is an in-person appointment at a Prometric test center.
“You need a degree or HR years.” Older eligibility tables tie the exam to education and experience. The 2026 handbook sets no requirement.
“SHRM doesn’t publish a pass rate.” It does, after each window; the latest SHRM-CP figure is 68% (May–Jul 2025).
Who the SHRM-CP is for
The handbook aims it at operational HR work: implementing policies, supporting day-to-day HR, serving as an HR point of contact, or starting an HR career. No title, degree or years of HR work are checked, and SHRM membership is optional.
That makes the choice mostly about level. If your work is setting HR strategy rather than carrying it out, the SHRM-SCP is the senior exam on the same BASK, and it requires 3 years of strategic-level HR work. If you are weighing the HRCI route, the PHR vs SHRM-CP comparison sets the two side by side, and the aPHR vs SHRM-CP page covers the case where you are new to HR.

Someone who has passed the SHRM-CP exam and keeps it current with 60 PDCs every three years. The credential is aimed at operational HR work; SHRM counts more than 147,400 holders of the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP combined.
Do you need HR experience to take the SHRM-CP?
No. The 2026 handbook sets no requirement: no degree, HR title or years of HR work are checked. Older pages with degree-and-years tables describe a rule that no longer applies.
How many questions are on the SHRM-CP exam?
134 questions, 110 of them scored. The 24 unscored field-test items are mixed in and not marked, so treat every question as if it counts.
Is the SHRM-CP exam hard?
SHRM’s own measure is the pass rate, 68% (May–Jul 2025); the senior exam’s rate is lower (SHRM-SCP pass rate). The part that needs its own preparation is the situational judgment items, where several answers look reasonable and only one earns credit.
