How hard is the aPHR exam? By the numbers

HRCI reports an aPHR pass rate of 71% (2025), close to the PHR’s 72% (2025), even though candidates for this exam need no HR experience. What makes it hard is breadth: 65 scored questions across five functional areas, a quarter of the weight on compliance and risk, in 1 h 45 min. Below, the rules that shape your attempt, written for someone who has never sat an HR exam.

How hard it is for a newcomer

The rate has barely moved: 74% in 2022, then 71%, 71% and 71%, with 2,145 people tested in 2025. PHR candidates bring 1–4 years of HR work to the exam; entry candidates may bring none, and still pass at nearly the same rate.

The obstacle for a newcomer is vocabulary. The outline’s 27 knowledge statements are dense with terms (compa-ratio, ADDIE, progressive discipline, COBRA) that someone outside HR has never used at work. Your own results by area are a better guide than the published rate: the practice test covers all five.

Pass rates in the 90s

Some prep sites advertise pass rates above 90% for their own customers. Those are their figures, not the certifier’s; the published rate for this exam is 71% (2025).

Exam day

  • Length: 90 questions in 1 h 45 min; the tutorial and closing survey run outside that clock.
  • Language: English. Spanish-language versions exist only for other credentials.
  • Breaks: none scheduled. Any break you take comes out of your testing time, and an online session allows none.
  • Arriving late: more than 15 minutes late counts as a no-show, and the fees are gone.
  • Laws: questions follow the federal rules in force on your test day, so a law that changed last month is tested in its new form.

Scoring: the 500 pass mark

Only the pass mark is published: 500 (scaled). A panel sets it by judging how a just-qualified entry-level candidate would do on each question, and equating keeps the mark steady from one exam form to the next. The top of the scale is not published.

What that means for preparation: no practice percentage converts to that scale. Aim for steady results in all five areas rather than a high average.

Results and appeals

At a test center you leave with a printed pass or fail; the result reaches your online account within two business days. Online, it appears in your account about an hour after the session. A failing report shows how far you were from the pass mark and how you did in each functional area. If you think something went wrong, you can file a Request for Reconsideration within 10 business days; HRCI lists no fee for it.

Exam dates and booking

There are no exam dates to wait for: testing runs year-round. Applications are usually processed in 1 business day, and from approval you have 180 days to test. Running short, you can ask once for a 60-day extension before day 170, for an unpublished fee.

To move an appointment, do it at least two business days ahead at a test center, or an hour ahead online; Pearson VUE charges its own fee, and missing the cutoff forfeits all fees.

Eligibility

Nothing to prove: no HR job, and no degree or diploma on the current exam page. A high school diploma was required until 2021. The professional-level experience rule governs the PHR and SPHR, not this exam. What the PHR asks for, and when waiting for it makes sense: PHR requirements.

If you fail: the retake rule

The rule in brief: 90-day wait, pay again, with a new application. Second Chance Insurance changes the second part: bought with the application and never later, it lets you sit a different form after the wait without a new application or payment. Its price is not printed. What a second attempt costs: exam cost.

Recertification

The credential lasts 3 years. Renewal takes 45 credits, one of them in ethics, or a retake; the PHR and SPHR ask for 60 credits. The fee is $169 for a single credential, as of Oct 2026. Renewal rules of both certifiers side by side: HR recertification.

What changed in 2021 and 2022

Two changes, close together. The 2021 outline replaced a six-area one that put HR Operations at 38% of the exam; today compliance and employee relations carry that weight. Then, between December 2021 and May 2022, the exam itself got shorter: 100 scored questions became 65, and the clock went from 2 hours 15 minutes to 1 h 45 min. A book that describes the longer exam or six areas was written before both.

About the aPHRi

The aPHRi is the international entry-level credential from the same certifier and a separate exam; this site covers only the US version. It is the only one of the certifier’s programs without NCCA accreditation, which the US exam has.
