SPHR study guide, mapped to the 2024 outline

The outline that took effect in 2024 lists 33 responsibilities in five areas and nothing else: no separate list of knowledge topics, as the 2018 edition had. So the useful way to prepare is task by task. For each responsibility, ask what a senior HR leader would decide and how they would measure it. This guide sets the order, shows which parts of older books no longer match, and points to the practice pages.

Where the points are

Leadership and Strategy at 33% gets the most time, then Talent Management. HR information management, safety and security is the smallest area, and its 3 tasks are concrete enough to learn quickly.

Study by responsibility, not by chapter

Each responsibility in the outline is one sentence with examples in brackets. Responsibility 1.8, for instance, lists turnover rates, cost per hire, return on investment and pay equity analysis. Turn each one into three questions:

  1. What decision does this task involve? For 1.8: which metric answers the executive team’s question.
  2. What evidence would a leader use? Data, benchmarks, a pilot, a cost model.
  3. How would you know it worked? A measure tied to a business result, not to activity such as course completions.

The area pages list the tasks in plain words and give you questions on each: start with Leadership and Strategy, which holds 12 responsibilities.

What moved since the 2018 outline

Books written for the 2018 outline are organized around areas that no longer exist. Old weight → 2024 weight:

  • Leadership and Strategy: 40% → 33%.
  • Talent Planning and Acquisition (16%) → Workforce Planning and Talent Acquisition, 17%, now with M&A cultural integration.
  • Learning and Development (12%) and Employee Relations and Engagement (20%) → folded into Talent Management, 23%, which also took labor strategy.
  • Total Rewards: 12% → 17%.
  • HR Information Management, Safety and Security: new, 10%.

Chapters on Learning and Development or on Employee Relations still hold useful material, but you study them as parts of Talent Management, where the 2024 tasks are about designing and evaluating programs.

A study order

  1. Take the practice test cold. It is weighted like the outline, so a weak area shows up in the chip filter.
  2. Leadership and Strategy first. It is the largest area, and its metrics and change-management tasks come back in every other area.
  3. Talent Management next, then Workforce Planning and Total Rewards. The last two share names with PHR areas, so study the senior verbs: design, evaluate, create.
  4. HR information management, safety and security last. Privacy, safety strategy, HR technology.
  5. Law as strategy. Know what a reduction in force, an acquisition or a new site sets in motion. The statutes are explained on the PHR pages: PHR employee and labor relations for the NLRA, OSHA and WARN, PHR total rewards for the FLSA, FMLA and COBRA.

If you fail, a failing report shows how far the score was from 500 and how you did in each functional area. Start the second round there.

SHRM materials prepare for SHRM exams

SHRM’s own prep system (sold as the SHRM Learning System, now the Certification Prep System) is built for the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP, which follow SHRM’s BASK and include situational judgment items. It is not organized around HRCI’s outline. A review of it lives on the SHRM-CP study guide.

Choosing a book or course

Check three things before you buy:

  • The areas. Five, with Leadership and Strategy at 33%. An edition that lists Learning and Development as its own area is on the 2018 outline, even if the cover says 2024–2025.
  • The exam length. Current: 115 scored questions plus 25 pretest items in 2 h 30 min. A book describing a longer exam predates mid-2021.
  • The fees. $595 for everyone. A book with member pricing is out of date or mixing in SHRM’s rules.

HRCI’s own A Guide to the Human Resource Body of Knowledge (HRBoK) is sold on Amazon (HRCI FAQ). It is a reference on HR practice, not a question bank.

SPHR study guide, quick answers

How do I study for the SPHR exam?

Work from the outline: 33 responsibilities in five areas, and for each one practice the decision a senior leader would make and how they would measure it. Begin with Leadership and Strategy, the largest area at 33%.

Is an SPHR book from before 2024 still useful?

Partly. The 2018 outline had Learning and Development and Employee Relations as separate areas and put Leadership and Strategy at 40%. The material is still relevant, but the structure and the weights are not. Pair an older book with the current outline.

Can I use SHRM study materials for the SPHR?

Not as your main source. SHRM materials follow SHRM’s BASK, with competencies and situational judgment items, while HRCI’s exam follows its own outline of responsibilities.

How long should I study?

HRCI sets no study time. A useful check is the practice test: once you are consistently comfortable in every area, including the smallest one, book the date inside your window.
